Teatro Niccolini

Teatro Niccolini

The Teatro Niccolini, even older than the Pergola theatre, until the early twentieth century was called 'Teatro del Cocomero', the ancient name of the street where it is located (today Via Ricasoli). Born in the seventeenth century from an idea and love of Don Lorenzo de' Medici, founder also of the Accademia drammatica, it was the first example of a school and stable company of prose theatre in the city. With the protection of Cardinal Giovan Carlo de' Medici, the Teatro del Cocomero began to be used for classical tragedies and comedies, as a noble entertainment for aristocrats and the Grand Ducal family itself. After ups and downs today, thanks to a complete restoration completed in 2016, the Niccolini is a private, multi-functional theatre, where, among others, performances of the Teatro della Pergola are staged.
