The creations of Florence-based Bottega Orafa Paolo Penko make their big-screen debut in the film Conclave, the latest project by Oscar-winning director Edward Berger. After winning over audiences in the United States, the film arrives in Italian theaters on December 19, with an extraordinary cast that includes Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Isabella Rossellini and Sergio Castellitto. But Conclave not only impresses with its plot and performances; the attention to visual details, in which the handcrafted jewelry made by Bottega Orafa Paolo Penko stands out, is a key element.

“In the world of cinema, every detail contributes to creating the magic that transports the viewer to another reality,” says Riccardo Penko. ”The collaboration with Conclave has been a journey into handcrafted creation, resulting in more than 530 unique pieces, including cardinal crosses, rings and cufflinks. Each piece of jewelry was conceived and designed to reflect the role and personality of the characters, helping to delineate their essence through the art of goldsmithing. The idea behind our work was to use jewelry not only as accessories, but as true narrative tools, capable of telling the story and character of each protagonist.”

Each creation was handcrafted, using traditional techniques such as lost-wax casting, fretwork, engraving and penkato, which give the pieces a unique individuality. Bottega Orafa Paolo Penko collaborated closely with costume designer Lisy Christl, whose vision ensured that the jewelry complemented the costumes perfectly, further enriching the visual narrative of the film. The end result is a perfect fusion of aesthetics and function, bringing a sophisticated and meaningful visual interpretation to the screen.
