A selection dedicated to the novels of Boccaccio's Decameron by Ais Toscana
We are at the 5th and 6th day of our selection dedicated to the 100 Tuscan wines to have in the cellar, one for each novel of the most famous work of 'our' Boccaccio, the Decameron. We started with the Supertuscans and Brunello di Montalcino, and then moved on to Chianti Classico and the wines of Bolgheri. In this new chapter we move on to tastings of the best Pinot Noir and the best White wines produced in Tuscany. As always, two sought after top ten!
THE FIFTH DAY: BEST PINOT NOIR
The 41st wine: Podere della Civettaja Pinot Nero 2015 100% Pinot Nero
Brightly coloured, vivid ruby. The wide bouquet opens on withered violets, juniper, cranberry and raspberries intact, continuing on light notes of pink pepper, star anise, cumin and gingerbread, intertwined with cola and hints of leather. The smooth tannins and freshness of the fruit give volume to the sip.
The 42nd wine: Melampo Pinot Nero 2015 Casteldelpiano 100% Pinot Nero
Transparent and bright ruby. Intriguing scents of hematite, chinotto, lavender, thyme, cigar box and musk anticipate memories of cherry, Sichuan pepper and almond paste. The exemplary acidity harmonizes completely with the elegant tannic texture. Excellent persistence with fruity and mineral returns.
The 43rd wine: Villa di Bagnolo Pinot Nero 2015 Marchesi Pancrazi 100% Pinot Nero
Ruby on. Smells of angostura, green pepper, cedar wood, Mediterranean maquis, caper flower, blueberry and cocoa yoghurt. The lively freshness and the enveloping tannin in good balance with the alcohol content accompany us to a long savoury trail with a pleasant taste of blood orange.
The 44th wine: Pomino Pinot Nero 2016 Frescobaldi 100% Pinot Nero
Transparent and bright ruby. Olfactory attack of withered lavender and blackberry, juniper berries, fern, redcurrant and raspberry. Closes with a light spice of pink pepper and mace. In the mouth the good freshness is intertwined with a vigorous and balsamic tannin, balancing the glyceric part.
The 45th wine: Fattoria Il Lago Pinot Nero 2013 100% Pinot Nero
Orange glare garnet. Cleanly spiced at the opening, then grilled bread, baked apple, turmeric, nutmeg, wild fennel, pyrite and currant jam, with balsamic hints to make the thread. Flavorful and taut mouth in the acid-tannic momentum. It smells of barley candy.
The 46th wine: Gattaia Pinot Nero 2015 Terre di Giotto 100% Pinot Nero
Transparent ruby with hints of evolution. The austere olfactory incipit gives way to notes of morello cherry, pomegranate, hibiscus, moss, cut grass, turmeric and red apple. Wet stone and walnut husk in the background. Substantial mouthfeel, characterized by good tannins and a fruity persistence.
The 47th wine: Black Pinot Nero 2015 Tenuta del Cabreo 100% Pinot Nero
Ruby with rich garnet hues. Pipe tobacco, licorice stick and toffee candy anticipate suggestions of pink grapefruit, incense, flint, eucalyptus and berry jam. The sip is accompanied by the alcoholic warmth in good balance with the sapidity and soft tannins.
The 48th wine: Piropo Pinot Nero 2014 Castello di Potentino 100% Pinot Nero
Light garnet, bright and transparent. The nose is expressed with captivating scents of kirsch, dried tomatoes, rust, sweet tobacco, leather, black pepper, mace and curry. At the sip silky tannins and the right acidity are in balance with the alcohol content. It closes slightly savory on sensations of cocoa and black cherry.
The 49th wine: Fortuni Pinot Nero 2014 Podere Fortuna 100% Pinot Nero
Lively ruby coat of good transparency. Memories of paprika, salty, coffee, cocoa and pot-pourri intertwine with notes of berry jelly, dried pine needles, ginger and balsamic puffs. Progressive in the center of the mouth, where it stretches on velvety tannins and redcurrant returns.
The 50th wine: Cuna Pinot Nero 2015 Podere Santa Felicita 100% Pinot Nero
Concentrated ruby. Smells of cassis, wax, camphor, macerated red flowers, cigar tobacco, fern and eucalyptus. The frame is framed by slight hints of salt and leather. The firm tannic grip, strong acidity and well-calibrated warmth lead us to a savoury finish of crunchy cherries.
THE SIXTH DAY: BEST WHITE WINES
Tuscany, land of great reds. But this extraordinary selection of the best Tuscan white wines will make you see things even in a different way. The wines have been selected and tasted by AIS Toscana Sommeliers in 2018!
The 51st wine: Degeres Igt Toscana 2015 Montepepe Vermentino 60%, Viognier 40%.
Bright golden. Intriguing nose of rennet apple, fragrance of bread and pastries, aromatic herbs, nutmeg, cumin and almond, it is enriched with toasted notes, candied citrus fruits and salty hints. The taste is harmonious, enveloping and savoury, with an infinite persistence.
The 52nd wine: Sanice Vernaccia di San Gimignano Docg Riserva 2015 Vincenzo Cesani Vernaccia di San Gimignano 100%.
Brilliant straw. Intense and variegated olfactory picture, with scents of chalk minerals, yellow plum, pear, wild fennel, lemon grass, almond. The 'taste is characterized by a continuous citrus freshness, with a tasty finish of dried fruit slightly pseudocaloric.
The 53rd wine: Criseo Bolgheri Bianco Doc 2016 Guado Al Melo Vermentino with percentages of Fiano, Verdicchio, Manzoni Bianco, Petit Manseng
Straw yellow with golden hues, refined bouquet, rich in cedar rind, thyme, sage, chamomile, aromatic herbs, mentholated and brackish notes appear in the background. On the palate it is tasty, round, fresh, with a marked minerality, exciting in its persistence.
The 54th wine: Batar Igt Toscana 2016 Querciabella Chardonnay 50%, Pinot Bianco 50%
Shiny straw with golden highlights. Fascinating with intense aromas of pineapple, ripe golden apple, peach jelly, hints of butter, talc, white pepper, hazelnut, it is embellished with a smoky finish. Full, rich, opulent mouth, well managed by a remarkable freshness.
The 55th wine: L'Albereta Riserva Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2015 Il Colombaio Di Santa Chiara 100% Vernaccia di San Gimignano
Lighted straw with golden reflections. Variegated and exalting the olfactory range that presents hints of apricot, cedar, citrus, orange blossom, acacia honey and lemon thyme. The sip is distinctly fresh, in the balanced progression, with a woody finish.
The 56th wine: Mezzo Braccio Igt Toscana 2016 Tenuta Monteloro Riesling Renano 100%
Soft straw with greenish highlights. Intriguing and refined olfactory picture, mineral scents of hydrocarbons, gravel, slate alternate with scents of peach, pear, passion fruit. The flavors are well marked, for a harmonious taste and in perfect balance.
The 57th wine: Chardonnay Monteverro Igt Tuscany 2015 Monteverro Chardonnay 100%
Intense straw yellow with golden reflections. Olfactory impression characterized by hints of ripe pineapple, banana, lemon peel and yellow peach. Creamy, fresh, sapid taste, excellent persistence with a pleasant memory of vanilla cream.
The 58th wine: L'Etrage Igt Toscana 2016 Sant'agnese Vermentino 100%
Straw yellow with golden, bright flashes. The olfactory fan is composed of white peach, kumquat, white flower potpourri, medicinal herbs and horseradish. In the mouth it is enveloping with an excellent structure and balance, it is completed with a decidedly savoury finish.
The 59th wine: Benefizio Pomino Bianco Doc Riserva 2017 Castello Pomino - Frescobaldi Chardonnay 100%
Bright straw yellow. The nose is followed by hints of yellow grapefruit, pineapple, banana, melted butter, sweet vanilla spice, in the background hints of chalk. Mouth rich, opulent, gradually balanced by a good fresh-sapid component.
The 60th wine: Poggio Argentato Igt Toscana 2017 Fattoria Le Pupille Sauvignon Blanc 60%, Petit Manseng 25%, Traminer 10%, Semillon 5%
Bright straw yellow. Scents of lime, cedar peel, white rose petals, white pepper, complete the olfactory picture with balsamic and mineral scents. Drink fresh, ready, balanced with a delicate roundness, the finish is good with a bitter finish.
