Bolgheri wines
Let's discover together the not-to-be-missed excellences of the well-known Tuscan village
BOLGHERI SUPERIORE 2018 AND BOLGHERI ROSSO 2018, 2019
Two excellent vintages that express in the glass the high quality of Bolgheri. The 2019 is extremely regular and already reveals itself with elegance and a very well-balanced balance. The 2018 has seen more ups and downs, but these have not, on the whole, conditioned the appropriate agronomic and oenological management. The tasting did not betray expectations and, while confirming the progressive potential of Bolgheri Superiore, showed a pleasant taste already enjoyable with ample stretches of balanced elegance. The trend towards more dynamic wines continues, and fortunately the peculiarities of the various territorial expressions as well as the style and hand of the producer (text Paolo Bini and Leonardo Taddei) are still evident.
DONNA OLIMPIA 1896 Millepassi bolgheri superiore 2018
Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot
Bright, deep ruby with persuasive essences of blackcurrant, peony, pine needles, blackberry jelly, liquorice and salty hints. Rich and promising, a phenolic frame that needs to be polished but is extremely fine. The finish is savoury with hints of orange and officinal herbs.
GRATTAMACCO bolgheri superiore 2018
Cabernet Sauvignon 65%, Merlot 20%, Sangiovese 15%.
Compact ruby mantle and stately expression on the nose that approaches with surprising ferruginous notes and then an impressive breadth of blackberry, iris, humus, laurel, sweet spices mixed with concentrated blueberry and coffee beans. Centrality of a tasty fruit on which the glyceric component embraces the noble astringent one. Harmonious infinite balsamic finish.
TENUTA SAN GUIDO Bolgheri Sassicaia 2018
Cabernet Sauvignon 85%, Cabernet Franc 15%.
Youthful nuances on a vivid ruby. Exemplary aromatic array of raspberry, wild berries, graphite, blond tobacco and delicate spices that intersect a constant return of black cherry, mineral and balsamic. Fresh, noble and slender taste profile, masterful tannins supporting a long tamarind finish.
I GREPPI - Greppicaia bolgheri superiore 2018
Cabernet Sauvignon 55%, Cabernet Franc 25%, Merlot 20%.
Impenetrable ruby. Intriguing nose of wisteria and pansy, citrus peel, hints of bitter and eucalyptus, plum and pink pepper. In the mouth sumptuous, enveloping, well regulated by a tannin of extreme quality that does not invade the race of persistent aromas.
POGGIO AL TESORO Sondraia bolgheri superiore 2018
Cabernet Sauvignon 65%, Merlot 25%, Cabernet Franc 10
Immediately pushes cassis and black fruit under spirits, balsamic whiffs among scents of anise, incense and lavender. The juice is generous, dense and soft with a well-balanced hardness that supports a sensory journey that continues to expand with a final hint of coffee.
CAMPO ALLA SUGHERA Arnione bolgheri superiore 2018
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot %.
Masterfully developed aromas: blackberry jam, dark potpourri, rosemary, earth to leather with juniper renewals that on the palate concentrate in a vigorous, still severe extract. Final good length and aromatic trail of tobacco.
ORNELLAIA bolgheri superiore 2018
Merlot 51%, Cabernet Sauvignon 40%, Cabernet Franc 7%, Petit Verdot 2%.
Beginning of vanilla orange, durone, burley tobacco and gianduia chocolate. The sip is stately with alcohol that warms a full dark fruit flavour and tannic grip of great promise.
LE FORNACELLE Guarda Boschi bolgheri superiore 2018
Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
Lavender, jammy sour cherries, oriental essences, mace and empyreumatic notes. Its juice is savoury and pleasant but less persuasive and more concrete, with lashing tannin.
MICHELE SATTA Piastraia bolgheri superiore 2018
Merlot 40% Cabernet Franc 30%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30%
A few seconds of waiting is worth the opening of a broad bouquet that takes the senses from blackberry jam to blood orange and then herbs, Mediterranean scrub and incense breath on a bed of violets. In the mouth it appears severe but of noble workmanship with tannins to be disposed of but which support a gustative vigour of very fine persistence.
CASTELLO DI BOLGHERI bolgheri superiore 2018
Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Cabernet Franc 15%, Merlot 5%.
Start of blackberry and brackish that turn to oregano, larch and roasting. A precious balance of invigorating and consistent drinking thanks to the alcohol that warms the sip and tannin that snaps on the finish closing with memories of herbs.
LA CIPRIANA - San Martino bolgheri superiore 2018
Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot
Still in declared refinement, it has purple reflections that introduce fresh aromas of cherry, pomegranate, dog rose accompanied by hazelnut, tobacco and nutmeg. On the tongue it has great class and more maturity with plush tannins. The finish is of dark fruit and rightly mentholated.
CAMPO AL PERO - Dedicated To Vittorio bolgheri superiore 2018
Merlot 100%
With dense ruby pigmentation, it forcefully pushes the blueberry and undergrowth scents from which brief and refreshing balsamic and mineral gusts emerge. More expressive on the palate where good acidity streamlines a substantially solid profile with central fruit and a pleasantly spicy finish.
DONNE FITTIPALDI bolgheri superiore 2018
Cabernet Sauvignon 40%, Cabernet Franc 30%, Merlot 30%
More fruit than flowers on the breath, no shortage of balsamic, rhubarb, white pepper and tea connotations. It has direct, central gustative energy, with juicy spiciness in which pleasant softness emerges but without adequate counter support.
TENUTA GUADO AL TASSO Guado Al Tasso bolgheri superiore 2018
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc
Balsamic and well-peppery scents of ripe dark fruit on cyclamen petals emerge from its intense ruby guise. Its liquid tends towards the austere, not particularly articulate but correct and in line on a stable and coherent path with a pleasant fruity leave.
TERRE DEL MARCHESATO Marchesale bolgheri superiore 2018
Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot
Lively to the eye but a little shy on the nose. Lets breathe cherry, tamarind, humus with hints of meat. It is more dynamic on the palate, even though it still has a youthful hardness that adds savoury hints of chinotto and pepper to the fruity flavour.
FABIO MOTTA - Le Gonnare Bolgheri Superiore 2018
Merlot, Syrah
A bit contracted on the nose, it manages to relax better on the palate. Scents of mulberry, violet, goudron and fig leaf that then come out with warm strength, boisée and vegetable aromatic nuances in a structured body of consistent flesh but still waiting for harmonization.
GUADO AL MELO - Rute bolgheri rosso 2018
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
Dense in the glass to the point of impenetrability. An initial olfactory impact of citrus then turns to thyme, graphite, blackberry, fern and coffee. On the palate it still paws at the fresh brio of tannins that still need to be tamed, leaving a taste identity of herbs, orange and cocoa on the finish.
CA' MARCANDA bolgheri red 2018
Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc
Attractive in its appearance and on the nose it melts in the seconds a respectable complexity: rose and black cherry come out from a start of chocolate, myrtle and cardamom. Concentrated juice, evolving, still tightened by a tannic mesh promising and perceptible even on the final by memories of mallow and blueberry.
LE MACCHIOLE bolgheri rosso 2019
Merlot 50%, Cabernet Franc 20%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%, Syrah 10%.
Intense in colour and nose, it has a persuasive beginning of marasca cherry and plum with spicy touches of dark flowers and juniper. In the mouth it is well dosed, with tannins of personality that do not affect the already excellent balance and a sufficiently long finish with balsamic returns.
PODERE SAPAIO Volpolo bolgheri rosso 2019
Cabernet Sauvignon 70%, Merlot 15%, Petit Verdot 15%.
A newly bottled sample with good purple brightness and extremely youthful fragrances: raspberry, cassis, herbs and elderberry. Energetic palate, firm but promising tannins and a full fruity contribution with good persistence and potential yet to be expressed.
